Hi Mark,
Thank you for mentioning the game we played.
Very exciting game indeed but too many complications for only one hour of play.
It’s hard to believe that we played that game 30 years ago!
Best regards, Dumitru

Mr. Ghizdavu, Surprise!

An exciting battle from the "old" chess league (played with telephones).

1979 National Chess League 4/22/79
D. Ghizdavu (CLEVELAND) - M. Ginsburg (DC)

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 Nf6 4. Nc3 cxd4 5. Nxd4 e6 6. Be3 a6 7. f4 b5 8. Qf3 Bb7 9. Bd3 Nbd7 10. g4 b4 11. Nce2 e5 12. Nb3 h5!? 13. g5 Ng4 14. f5 Nxe3 15. Qxe3 a5 16. O-O-O a4 17. Nd2 d5 18. exd5 Bc5 19. Qg3 Bxd5 20. Be4 Bxa2! 21. Bc6!? Rc8?

(I didn't see 21... O-O! 22. Ne4? (22. f6 Rc8 unclear) Qb6 23. Bxd7 Be3+ 24. Nd2 Rfd8!)

22. Bxa4 O-O 23. Ne4 Qb6 24. Rxd7 Be3+ 25. Kd1 Rfd8 26. Ke1 Rxd7 27. Nf6+ Kh8 28. Nxd7 Qa7 29. b3 Rxc2 30. Qf3
Bxb3 31. Qxh5+ Kg8 32. g6 Bh6?

(This second mistake is fatal. I have to play 32... Rxe2+! 33. Kxe2 (33. Qxe2 Bxa4 34. gxf7+ Kxf7 about equal) 33... Bc4+ 34.
Kf3 Bd5+ and black survives)

33. Bxb3 Qa1+

(Now it's all over but both sides are in time pressure, so with the floating white king there was a little excitement left.)

34. Kf2 Qd4+ 35. Kg3 Bf4+ 36. Kh3 Qd3+

(I should have tried 36... Qe3+ hoping for 37. Ng3 Rxh2+ mating of course that would not happen.)

37. Kh4 Bg5+ 38. Qxg5 Qe4+ 39. Qg4 Qxh1 40. gxf7+ 1-0

Very exciting!

Hello to everybody,
My name is Dumitru Ghizdavu, I’m International Chess Master and few weeks ago I moved from Cleveland, Ohio aria to Surprise, Arizona.
I would like to know if is possible the location where each match is played.
Regarding the match against New Jersey, if I’m aloud to make a prediction, I would say that on first three boards the chances are about even, but on board number four the Scorpions with David Adelberg have better chances.
Thank you and good luck to everybody!

'The Dallas Destiny, who we were fortunate to draw with in our last match after a memorable ending..'

Cannot concur. Kiewra plays that lousy line on board 3 and we don't get the full point? Given Barthy had a miracle perp but how often does our #2 lose like that? Besides if you already reeled in the full point versus that sideline Dragon dreck (I enjoyed beating it last year vs Van de Mortel) and the self-constructed perp (the pawn move h4 completing the white king prison) on #1 is spotted, we win 2.5 - 1.5. I think they were incredibly fortunate to draw the match. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Robby took the easy way out by calling every game a toss up. I give Arizona the nod in this match, and here's why:

1. Board 4: Boards 1-3 are easily all toss-ups. On Board 4, the Scorpions have the advantage. Sean "I already owe Matan $100" Finn is making his season debut in USCL and hasn't been playing many OTB tournaments. Adelberg is active, progressing quickly, and off to a fiery start in the USCL. He also played a sick game last week and got 2nd Place in last week's game of the week.

2. No team has ever started 6-0. The Knockouts are not a superpower: they're not even that good on paper, they've just been producing, and they have more often than not won by a very narrow margin.

3. A lot of their success has been attributable to GM Joel. If he doesn't win (and I don't see any reason to give him the edge as Black over Ramirez), Dirty Jersey probably won't win

4. The NJ Jets were undefeated before this week too. Now they aren't. Who dat say dey gon beat dem Saints?!

My pick: Scorpions win the match. Nough said.
