Alejandro Ramirez is considered one of the top Grandmasters in the US at the moment with a rating over 2600 USCF. He was the first Central American GM, at the age of 15 years old, one month younger than Bobby Fischer. This makes him among the youngest Grandmasters ever and since then has continuously improved. He was the winner of the 2003 2.3 Zonal Tournament ahead of other grandmasters including Leinier Dominguez. Also in 2003 he was the winner of the Nazir Atallah Cup in the Dominican Republic. On top of this he was a participant in the 2004 World Chess Championship in Tripoli, Libya.
In recent times, he was the winner of the 2008 Morelia International Open as well as the co-winner of the 2008 New York International. He was a three time Olympiad participant for Costa Rica in 2002, 2004, and 2008.
